VP Leni Robredo ‘strongly opposes’ Marcos burial at Libingan

Vice President Leni Robredo on Monday, August 8, issued a strong statement against the approved interment of the late President Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

  The toughest contender of the late dictator’s son Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr during the last elections said: “How can we allow a hero’s burial for a man who has plundered our country and was responsible for the death and disappearance of many Filipinos?”

“Those who have greatly committed crimes and moral turpitude to the Filipino people cannot be buried in the Libingan ng mga Bayani,” she added.

Being a human rights lawyer herself, the Vice President pointed out that the late President was “no hero” with all the human rights violations committed under his regime.

“This decision will not bring unity to our country; it will only deepen the unhealed wounds of the survivors and family members of victims of the terrible years under the Marcos presidency,” Robredo said, opposing President Rodrigo Duterte’s statement that the interment would unite the divided Philippines.

“It is our responsibility to teach our children the heroism and sacrifice of our forefathers. And Mr. Marcos is no hero,” she maintained.

  During the elections, Robredo has been firm on her stance against the proposed burial of the late Marcos at the honored gravesite.

She has also been a firm critic when the issue about the dictatorship was raised during the 30^thanniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution that toppled Marcos. The landmark celebration coincided with the elections when Marcos Jr was running against Robredo.

Malacañang confirmed on Sunday, August 7, that Duterte has approved Marcos’ burial at the Libingan. That evening, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana ordered the Armed Forces of the Philippines to commence the preparations for the interment set to happen in September.
