Keith Pierce celebrated her 10th birthday like other kids would have done it. He played with his friends, ate his favorite food, and opened his presents. He was always described as energetic and athletic. He was also a rising star football player and wrestler as a fourth-grader according to his teachers
However, a month after his birthday, one of his legs began to swell. His parents decided to bring him to the doctor, but even after many visits, his condition only got worse. But when the doctors noticed the strange round marking in his affected leg, they ruled out that Keith had cancer.
It turned out that Keith was bitten by one of most poisonous spiders in North America.
"I saw what appeared to be a set of fang marks. I tried to tell them that it was a spider bite. " This is what Keith's mother stated.
Keith was taken then to St. Vincent so he can be treated with strong IV antibiotics. But it was too late. Two days later, sepsis, or the poisoning of the blood, sets in. The doctors tried to perform emergency surgery, but Keith never work out.
"Keith passed away less than 24 hours later- one month and four days after his 10th birthday." Keith's mother shared emotionally.
This is a caution to all to be careful around bushy areas or where spiders might be thriving. Many poisonous spiders are around and might bite you. If ever bitten, wash the wound with hot and soapy water and put a cold compress. Contact your doctors immediately once the wound persists.
