Volunteers can make or break any event and when it comes to Olympics they are the most important people who ensure smooth running of the games. But, in Rio Olympics volunteers have added to the misery of the games which is already being dubbed as one of the worst.
According to former International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge, volunteers are invaluable at the games and even calls them as the true Olympians. However, many have not taken this too seriously and have skipped the event or stopped showing up.
It is reported that the organizers are finding it difficult to make sure the venues are well staffed. A spokesperson said: “At some venues, only 20 percent of volunteers have actually shown up”.
Volunteers report that many of them have not showed up after receiving work outfits and complimentary watches.
The organizers have a different view and believe that they can manage the events. “Of the 50,000 volunteers involved in the delivery of the Olympic Games, we have an average attendance rate of just over 70 percent,” this number allows us to operate at a comfortable level as some volunteers not showing up was factored into our plans.” (It’s worth noting that in 2014, when bragging about the 240,000 volunteer applications they received, they needed 70,000 volunteers were “required to stage a successful Olympic Games.”)
Meanwhile, the organizers have other problems to deal with such as food and drink shortages, exploding bags, sick athletes and weird green pool.
