Earlier this week, the diving pool at the Rio Olympics mysteriously turned an alarming shade of green — and no one was able to explain why.
Tom Daley, a British diver just pointed something out that I actually never noticed. And it’s kinda freaking people out.

He was then met with a wide array of hilarious responses:

The problem isn’t that there are different color pools (thats just fine), but the fact that they were BLUE one moment, and then they turned green only 2 days apart.
Not only is it kinda gross and freaking the world out, but it’s also affecting the way the athletes preform. That has to be a major red flag.
#greenpool – @toniacouch says it was so green she couldn’t see dive partner @LoisToulson under the water #Rio2016

Journalists at Rio tried to do some investigating, but were told little to no information on the matter.
.@TeamGB girls doing well in diving, battling for a medal in a very green pool! Did someone forget the chlorine tablets last night?

Dan Walker decided to do some internet research, which basically means ask thousands of people what they thought, and here were the results:
No-one will give an explanation for the green diving pool. An official statement from Rio2016 is being prepared!!!

The internet has now gone full fledged comedy on this matter. We can’t help but laugh at some of these:

According to pool experts (didn’t know that was a thing), the problem is most likely caused by algae. Another possibility could even be the presence of copper ions in the water. For all you science nerds, that means it’s the result of bad pH balance in the water.
A simple disinfectant or algicide can clear the algae issue, and a “sequestering or chelating agent” would rake care of the ions issue. Let’s all pretend like we know what that means.
