Former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo expressed her gratitude to President Rogrigo Duterte and the Supreme Court after her plunder charges were effectively dismissed.
“I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the honorable members of the Supreme Court for finally stopping the persecution I had unjustly gone through the last five years. My most profound appreciation to His Excellency Rodrigo Duterte for allowing due process to take its course," she said on Tuesday.
It can be remembered that the Presdent, during his campaign period, has said that if he were to be elected he will release Arroyo from detention.
Meanwhile, Arroyo was sued for the release of P366 million in Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) intelligence funds during her last two years as chief executive. But due to health reasons, she has been under hospital arrest for five years.
However, on Tuesday, the SC ordered her release when Arroyo’s demurrer to evidence was granted, and reversed the Sandiganbayan First Division’s April 6, 2015 and September 10, 2015 resolutions.
Arroyo sincerely hopes that “everyone will respect and recognize the truth that has been established”. She also calls on to keep the faith in the justice system, and thanked God for letting “justice and righteousness” prevail in what she called as “injustice and wrongdoing”.
She also said that those who are responsible for the “persecution” should be held responsible. “And that the disregard of truth for which I was made to suffer be dealt with accordingly at the soonest possible time,” she said. | ASCS - FNPH
