“I will insist: no party-list” – Duterte

President Rodrigo Duterte expressed on Friday his desire to exclude the party-list system from the Constitution.

“It will never come again,” he said, talking about amending the 1987 constitution after his visit to the militiamen who were wounded in an ambush by communist rebels on Wednesday. “With a new constitution, I will insist, no party-list.”

The president explained that the party-lists “abused” the system wherein the rich are organizing groups of their own. “Representing what? Security guards? That’s a mockery of the law.”

However, he also said that he would make sure that the changes to the Constitution would be responsive to the will of the people. He will now allow a Constitution that is ant-Filipino.

His administration decided to amend the Constitution through a constituent assembly instead of a convention because the latter would be costly. Duterte seeks to ease public fears that lawmakers in the assembly would serve their own interests.

“I will be there,” he said. “When worse comes to worst, they know what will happen.” | ASCS
