According to Capt. Rhyan Batchar, chief information officer of the 10th Infantry Division, a CAFGU member and four others were wounded during the ambush that happened early Wednesday morning in Barangay Gupital, Kapalong, Davao del Norte.
He did not disclose the identity of the fatalities.
“This is a clear disregard by the NPAs to the declaration of a unilateral ceasefire by President Duterte,” Batchar told reporters.
He also said that the CAFGU members were ordered to be pulled out from their position in Sitio Kapatagan and to return to their patrol base in Sitio Patil. However, they were ambushed before they could return to base.
The Army operations in the whole Davao region and in neighbouring provinces in Mindanao had stopped after the declaration of the President and upon the orders of the Armed Forces Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Ricardo Viscaya.
“But we will continue our support to law enforcement operations, protect the communities and the people in our areas of jurisdiction,” Batchar explained.
He also assured that the Army will continue to secure vital government installations and flagship projects being implemented in the area.
“We will not lower our guard. We will always be on alert despite the presence of unilateral ceasefire,” he said.
Meanwhile, the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) welcomed the unilateral ceasefire as declared by the president. However, NDFP chair Luis Jalandoni said that they still have to study the full text of the declaration before making their move.
PNP PRO-11 will also abide by the declaration but will continue their law enforcement tasks.
“We will comply with the ceasefire as far as offensive and combat operations are concerned,” Chief Inspector Andrea dela Cerna, spokesperson of PNP PRO-11, said in a press conference. |ASCS
