Leyte mayor linked to illegal drugs surrenders, son still at large

Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr. of Albuera town in Leyte surrendered to police authorities less than 24 hours after President Rodrigo Duterte demanded his and his son’s surrender for their alleged involvement in the illegal drug trade.
On Monday, August 1, President Duterte asked the Espinosas to surrender and have threatened to issue a shoot-on-sight order should they fail to turn themselves in within 24 hours.
Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella announced that the mayor is now under the custody of Philippine National Police Chief Director General Ronald De la Rosa, but the son, Kerwin, is still at large.

President Duterte ordered the mayor and his son’s surrender after Espinosa Sr.’s two bodyguards and three employees were caught during a drug buy-bust operation conducted by police in Barangay Benolho in Albuera last week. Several sachets of shabu worth P1.9 million were seized from the suspects. Two pistols and several pieces of live ammunition were confiscated.

Arrested were Jessie Ocares, Marcelo Adorco, Jose Antipuesto, Jeffrey Pesquera, and a certain Ernesto.
According to a Manila Times story dated August 2, 2016, four other suspects were able to elude arrest after they ran and hid inside Kerwin’s house which is located inside the Espinosa compound.
