Congressmen from AKO-Bicol partylist filed House Bill 529 aiming to reduce the age for senior citizens in the Philippines from 60 to 56. The bill, filed by Representatives Rodel Batocabe, Alfredo Garbin Jr. and Christopher Co, wants to amend Republic Act 7432 which is also known as “An Act to Maximize the Contribution of Senior Citizens to Nation Building, Grant Benefits and Special Privileges and for Other Purposes.” The proponents pointed out that at the age of 56 “age-related ailments and other physical limitations are already experienced” and thus, lowering the age for them to be qualified as a senior citizen would earlier give Filipinos the benefits and privileges given to the present senior citizens. They added that the change in lifestyle these days makes people more vulnerable to sickness. Among the privileges currently given to senior citizens are medical-related privileges, income tax exemptions and educational privileges.
