After being described by Pres. Rodrigo Duterte as arrogant, exiled communist leader Jose Maria Sison criticized his former student, describing him as more arrogant.
GMA News Online quoted the 77-year-old founder of the Communist Party of the Philippines as saying: “It is more arrogant of him to give ultimatum [for CPP to declare ceasefire].”
Furthermore, Sison said that he prefers to talk with President Duterte personally or behind closed doors about the substantive agenda of peace talks in order for it to push through.
He expressed that he will ignore the President’s angry outbursts because he has a high level of tolerance for such behavior.
In a television interview last week, Sison criticized Duterte for being “ill-tempered” and accused him of acting like a bully in treating the CPP like his personal servant.
On Friday, August 5, in front of soldiers in Camp General Macario Peralta in Jamindan, Capiz, President Duterte accused Sison of being arrogant.
Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted him as saying: “Itong komunista, akala mo kung magsalita they are the force to reckon with (By the way this Communist speaks, you would think they’re a force to reckon with) when as a matter of fact they cannot even occupy a single barangay in a single day.”
“Nayayabangan ako sa iyo ( I find you really arrogant), as if you are really the one on power,” he added.
President Duterte added that the only advantage that the CPP has is their position in the mountains, which allows them to ambush civilians and the military.
In his first State of the Nation Address last July 25, the president declared a unilateral ceasefire with the communist rebels but it lasted only until July 30 because he canceled it after the group failed to reciprocate his ceasefire initiative.
