This prison can pass as the World’s Worst Prison and is located in the Philippines.
Quezon City Jail in Manila, little did everyone know, have the worst environment for inmates. 3,800 prisoners craned inside a supposedly 800-maximum capacity of this notorious prison. There is a constant search for sleeping space, and do not have enough supply of food and water not to mention proper ventilation that causes rashed and boils to the inmates.
160 to 200 prisoners are crammed in a cell built for 20. This compelled the inmates to just take turns in sleeping. But they do not just plainly sleep in cold floors. Due to lack of space, they sleep in an open-air basketball court, steps of staircases, underneath beds.
These photos reveal the daily conditions that these prisoners have to endure. These photos are of Raymund Narag, a former inmate at the Quezon City Jail, after being wrongly accused of murdering a young man back when he was just 20 years old.
He went back to check the condition of the prison, after he studied Criminal Justice in Southern Illinois Unversity in the United States.
‘For almost seven years, I experienced death every waking moment of my life inside the jail,’ he shared.
He details the worst living conditions inside the cell in his book ‘Freedom and Death Inside the Jail.’
Some inmates di of stroke because they are forced to sleep in damp floor spaces or in squatted poition.
He also described food rations as ‘fit for pigs’ and usually contains rusty nails and cockroaches.
“Inmates are prone to contagious diseases because of the poor living conditions in their cells. They sleep in overcrowded, poorly ventilated cells. The supply of potable water is very limited. Food rations have inadequate nutritional content. Sick and healthy inmates are grouped in the same cells.” he said
He walked out of this prison back in the year 2002 after serving seven years inside and he was just too determined to share the horrors he had suffered.
‘A walk through the cells in Quezon City Jail makes one realize how far behind the normal jail standards the penal institution lags.’he said.
These inmates gets to breathe outside air when they go to their trials. But after that, they are back to their horrendous lifestyle inside the prison.
