Few villains can compete with either the iconic status or the longevity of The Joker: he is a phenomenon in his own right, and has as many fans as his moral opposite. That’s quite the achievement for a character whose actions are quite often utterly despicable, but then he’s so unique, colorful and interesting that it’s hard to dislike him.
There is hardly a character who is as glamorous as the clown prince of crime. Even though he is a villain, he has his own following and it is that what makes him so special.
Although he is one of the most popular characters in the comic book universe, very little is known about his origins. This has led many fans to speculate and form theories about the Joker’s origins.
Here are some of the most intriguing theories about the clown prince of Crime’s origins.
1. Joker is Batman from the future
According to this theory, the Joker is none other the Batman himself. After Batman defeats all the evil in the DC universe, he finds himself launched through time in a different city. He soon sees his mother, father, and his younger self, but soon realizes that he needs to kill his parents because if he doesn’t, then there will be no Batman. Bruce knows that the world needs the Batman, so he breaks his moral code and kills his own parents. Later, he is unable to bear the stress of what he has done. This drives him insane and ultimately makes him his own arch-nemesis, the Joker.
2. Gotham’s Penguin is actually the Joker
Fans of the popular TV series Gotham have started to speculate that Penguin is the actual Joker. According to this theory, it is Penguin who later transforms into Joker. But it becomes difficult to accept the theory as the both of them are two different villains, in the comic book universe.
3. The Joker Is A Virus That Infects People
According to an another popular fan theory, the Joker not actually a person but a virus that infects people and drives them insane. Though how the virus originated and who controls it still remains ambiguous. It also says that there might be more than one Joker.
4. Thomas Wayne became the Joker
In a particular episode in the comics, when Batman finally comes to know about the Joker’s origins he just could not believe it. The original identity is not revealed to the readers and it is only Batman who comes to know about it. His reaction has led many comic book fans to speculate that the Joker is actually his own father Thomas Wayne.
He somehow didn’t die that night and later when he gained consciousness he became completely insane and later became the Joker.
In the alternate “Flashpoint” universe, Martha Wayne is unable to cope with the loss of her young son and becomes The Joker. While Bruce Wayne’s father becomes the Batman.
5. Alfred Pennyworth is the Joker
It is one of the most shocking theories about the Joker. According to this theory, the Joker is none other than Batman’s butler Alfred himself.
