Recto stays adamant car registration and driver’s license validity

Senate Minority Leader Ralph Recto is currently looking into including the extension of motor vehicle registration validity in his proposal to lengthen also the validity of driver’s license to five years. This particular initiative jives well with President Rodrigo Duterte’s call to make the procurement of government documents for efficient for the public.

In his Senate Bill No. 271 that aims to extend the validity of the nonprofessional driver’s license from three years to five years, Recto said that “he finds merit in some proposals to include certain types of motor vehicles”.

He also said that for new private vehicles, the registration should be valid for up to four years.

Once approved, this could solve the long queues in the offices of the Land Transportation Office and would then “Spare car owners form making an annual pilgrimage.”

However, public utility vehicles must not be included in the extension grant because they should undergo annual inspection and registration. This is to ensure public safety.

The senator has also expressed that he would consult law enforcement agencies, motoring associations, and other stakeholders regarding his proposal.

Currently, there are an estimated eight million registered motor vehicles nationwide. The regular registration is expected to provide Php14.5 billion in fees this year. | ASCS - FNPH
