Studio Ghibli films have so much to offer for people of all ages. Their films are always packed with hard hitting messages and Spirited away in one of them. For those watching studio Ghibli films for the first time it may feel random and rather hard to accept since the characters and themes are quite different from mainstream media.
Many hardcore fans of Studio Ghibli Films know that besides the great visualization and theme there are brilliant underlying meaning to certain characters and events. But with spirited away fans were still not clear and now the Hayao Miyazaki himself has answered.
Japanese Twitter user @0910noncha sent some questions about the film to Studio Ghibli earlier this year. To her delight, she got a thoughtful reply from a Ghibli employee, which she posted to her Twitter account on July 9.
千と千尋の神隠し見てて思い出したけど、すごーい昔お父さんの食べてる物と両親が豚になった事が疑問で疑問だったからジブリに手紙送ったら、忘れた頃に返信きた笑

According to a translation from Rocket 24 News, the employee told her that Miyazaki said that Chihiro’s parents becoming pigs at the start of the film symbolized Japan’s bubble economy of the 1980s. Explaining further the letter says that after someone becomes a pig, they never return to being human but instead adapt to the body and soul of a pig. “This doesn’t just apply to the fantasy world,” it read.
