Trillanes proposes Hacienda Binay be used as rehab center

In line with the intensified campaign anti-illegal drug campaign of the current administration and the corruption case of former Vice President JejomarBinay, Senator Antonio Trillanes has suggested that Binay’s Hacienda be confiscated by the government to be used as a drug treatment facility.

However, experts say that this is a long shot.

According to Mon Casiple, political analyst, it would be hard to do since it has yet to be proven that the 350-hectre land in Batangas is really owned by Binay, and if it’s an ill-gotten wealth.

Casiple also reiterated that he believes that community and family-based rehabilitation would be more effective.

Public Attorneys’ Office chief Percida Acosta said that if there is indeed a lack of rehabilitation centers, drug-dependents can rely on their family for support and guidance.

Former DILG secretary Rafael Alunan, public-private partnership is needed in order to increase the number of rehab centers in the country.
“If there are millions of users, iilanlangangating rehab centers, both public and private, angkonti,” Alunan explained. He also suggested that medical graduates shall be mobilized and deployed to existing and to-be-built rehab facilities.

Meanwhile, Senator Tito Sotto is pushing a bill that aims for the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation to cover the drug dependents as beneficiaries and for the rehab facilities to be recognized as health institutions.

Once enacted into law, it could help rehabilitate the thousands of drug-dependents who surrendered recently. | ASCS - FNPH
