A Milwaukee police officer was shot early Sunday as he was sitting inside his squad car, police said in a statement.
Officers with the Milwaukee Police Department responded to the 3500 block of S. 17th Street on July 17 for “two domestic violence related incidents and during both occasions, the suspect was no longer there when officers arrived,” according to the statement.
The, in the same area, at around 2 a.m., the unnamed officer, who was sitting in his vehicle, was shot after a suspect approached on foot.
The suspect “fired a gun several times into the squad car, striking the officer several times,” the department said. The officer was transported to a nearby hospital, where he’s suffering from non-life-threatening—but serious—injuries.
“As officers were on scene investigating regarding the injured officer they heard a single gun shot around 2:30 a.m., in the 3500 block of South 17th Street. They found a male who had suffered an apparent self-inflicted fatal gun shot wound to the head. A handgun was recovered next to the suspect,” officers added.
The suspect is a 20-year-old man with an arrest record that includes two felonies. He’s also the suspect of the two domestic violence incidents.
“It is believed that this person is the suspect who shot the officer,” the Milwaukee Police Department said. Police are not seeking any other suspect.
Results of an investigation into the shooting is pending.
Police identified the officer as a 31-year-old male with 13 years of police experience.
“This is just another example of the risks our officers take each and every day to protect these citizens,” Asst. Police Chief William Jessup told WISN-TV.
