Our best source for understanding space is NASA Hollywood. Take a look at the number of space related movie they release and you’ll be qualified enough to join NASA, right? Nope! But it does get a few things right like the reasons for why different suits are worn by astronauts.
Like these orange ones:
And these white ones:
The orange spacesuits are called Advanced Crew Escape Suits (ACES).
They are used specifically during launch and re-entry back into Earth’s atmosphere. The Orange spacesuits have built-in survival gear, that can be useful if an accident occurs during launch and re-entry.
Also, the colour orange is easily visible when the ground crew is doing a search and rescue operation.
The White spacesuits are called Extravehicular Activity(EVA) suits.
They are built specially for spacewalks. They are white because they reflect most of the sun’s radiation. These suits are built for space survival, rather than emergency survival. It has a cooling system, a urine disposal bag, air filtration system and a tough shell to protect astronauts from getting peppered by micrometeoroids in space.
To make it easier:
So now you know:
Orange spacesuit – Only during launch and re-entry.
White spacesuit – Only during spacewalks.
