Donald Trump wrote that he was going to reopen the
controversial Trump University after lawsuits alleging fraud against the
business school are “disposed of.”
“After the litigation is disposed of and the case won, I have
instructed my execs to open Trump U(?), so much interest in it! I will
be pres.”
Trump University is currently in litigation with two class action
lawsuits and a $40 million lawsuit from New York Attorney General Eric
Schneiderman who has called the organization “a fraud from beginning to
end.”
Hillary Clinton has also made the school one of her main attacking points on the campaign trail and on her own Twitter account.
“Trump University employed instructors with no experience and lied to
sell outrageously expensive packages,” the likely Democratic nominee wrote. “In a word: fraud.”
Donald Trump has defended the University, criticizing U.S. District
Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel who he’s called “biased,” a “hater,” and in a
speech, he alluded to Curiel’s ethnicity saying that he “happens to be,
we believe, Mexican.”
Judge Curiel was originally going to set the date of the trial for
this summer but decided to postpone it until after the election cycle,
fearing a “media frenzy.”
In a recent turn of events, Curiel ordered the release of documents
associated with the Trump University case, including the school’s
“playbook.” Those documents revealed a moneymaking scheme that preyed
on and pressured potential customers:
“When you introduce the price, don’t make it sound like you think
it’s a lot of money, if you don’t make a big deal out of it they won’t,”
the document says about meeting with students individually.
“If they can afford the gold elite don’t allow them to think about doing anything besides the gold elite.”
